Major renovation took place in most departments while maintaining all county services. This required extensive coordination with department staff. Renovations included structural, mechanical, electrical and architectural. While most of the work was done on the interior of the courthouse, some exterior renovation was also necessary. A four-story addition to the rear of the courthouse and a two story parking deck was included.
The second renovation to the Houghton County Courthouse included masonry and sandstone tuck pointing, joint repair and sealing, repair and repainting of existing windows and repair and repainting of existing metal cornice. Also included was removal of the original copper roof and installation of new copper roofing panels. The new copper panels were treated with an acid wash to create a consistent natural aging appearance.
Construction of a new sheriff vehicle storage building and a new storage vault below the parking deck was part of the project as well.
